Dental X-ray for dental implant planning

A dentist may refer a panoramic dental x-ray (OPG; Orthopantomogram) and/or a Cone Beam CT (CBCT) scan when they are trying to determine the suitability of dental implants for a patient.

An OPG x-ray is a 2D image that will show the general status of your teeth and supporting jaw bone.

A Cone Beam CT (CBCT) is a 3D scan that gives additional information such as the thickness of bone as well as vital structures in the vicinity such as the inferior dental nerve and the maxillary sinus. Both OPG and CBCT scans can also be used to review the status of a dental implant or bone graft, CBCT scans generally provide more information. Your dentist will decide on which imaging modality is required based on your clinical information.
